Cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful procedures to restore vision performed today.

The Procedure — What Happens During Surgery

Cataract surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. The surgery usually takes about 10–20 minutes, though your total visit will be longer. During the procedure:

  1. Your eye is numbed with drops.
  2. The cloudy lens is gently removed.
  3. A clear artificial lens is placed in its position.

The new lens remains in your eye permanently and does not require maintenance. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure.

Understanding Cost and Insurance

Is Cataract Surgery Covered by Insurance?

In most cases, cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and many insurance plans when it is medically necessary. Standard cataract surgery with a basic monofocal lens is typically included in this coverage.

Patients are usually responsible for deductibles and coinsurance, often around 20% of the approved cost.

What About Advanced Lens Options?

Some patients choose advanced lens implants designed to reduce dependence on glasses. These lenses may involve additional out-of-pocket costs because they are considered elective upgrades.

Your care team will review all options and costs with you before any decisions are made.

Explore Financing Options

Financing is a simple way to pay for procedures, treatments, products, and services that your doctor recommends. Cardholders have access to a wide array of payment and special financing options. The card can be used for purchases again and again, and there are often no annual fees or prepayment penalties.
